I have on occasion set up a shared folder with an outside client who accidentally saved some things in our folder he must had meant to go to a private folder, talk about freaking awkward. I think Dropbox works great if you've got a system worked out, especially if you're working with regulars. My rig computer stays running all the time in case someone decides to upload something to me.įor clients outside the usual's I'll use the we transfer thing sometimes, but most people have dropbox so I'll just do the same thing with them. There is also a "Trash" folder usually in there so when either one of us is done we put it in that folder, let's one or the other know it's cool to wipe off. Then I just toss that master folder into our shared folder and I'm done. Mixes I create a master folder with sub folders of the mix, TV tracks and quick ref. If I'm editing a project I'll export directly into it so while it's exporting it's also uploading. I have a shared folders with producers and songwriters and I've never had any issues. At that point there is a complete disconnect between project/sender and the file. It is a horrible user experience for me because I might get 10 of them in one week, reflexively download on receipt because of the vanishing links, and then find 10 alphanumerically named, multi gigabyte zip files in my DL folder a week later when the respective project is actually on my schedule. But I should clarify, I'm talking about being the recipient. But I'm not saying those products are perfect.ġ1:06:42 GMT -6 notneeson said:Yes, really. None of this happens to me with Google Drive, Dropbox, or Hightail. Often the forwarder is on another continent and we lose a day trying to get the file replaced. One in ten of these transfers might have an actual file name, at which point my only beef with wetransfer is the disappearing links- people forward them to me all the time on projects and they're already expired. I assume it is because the sender did not understand or complete the upload form, but it really sucks. So then, I can only figure out what's what by unzipping them which is time consuming and drives me nuts.

The benefit of having fewer files is that the browser has to make fewer HTTP requests. It consists of combining CSS or JavaScript files into just one CSS or JavaScript file. Minification vs Concatenation: Which One to ChooseĬoncatenation is another common technique for improving web performance. Compressed files have a content-encoding header, usually with a gzip or br value. Minified files typically have “.min” in their name. To do so, open the Network tab (right-click and select “Inspect”) in your browser and look at the file names and response headers. You can also use the Network tab to see if files have been minified and compressed. Again, go over your providers’ documentation to see if this has been taken care of for you. Like minification, a few CDN providers (and hosting companies) automatically compress files on their servers. While gzip is the most popular compression method, there are lots of others out there.įor example, the Brotli algorithm has proven to be equally good, if not better, in some aspects. Here’s a great example of this process in action:Īs you can see, the text in brackets is repetitive, so gzip replaces it with a pointer. The benefit is that pointers use less space than text. Gzipping works by finding the repetitive strings and replacing them with pointers to the first instance of the string. In fact, people often use the term “gzipping” as a substitute for compression. The most popular compression tool is gzip. While minification removes unnecessary data from a file, compression rewrites the files’ binary code and encodes the information using fewer bits than the original. However, there’s a fundamental difference between the two. Both techniques essentially provide the same benefit, i.e., making files smaller. People often confuse minification and compression (zipping), which is understandable. Lots of CDN providers also automatically minify files on their servers.Ĭompression vs Minification: Main Differences Most JavaScript libraries provide minified versions of their files by default. That’s why minification has become an industry standard over the last few years. But when you apply the process to large code files, the savings are significant. In this example, the actual size difference between the regular and minified version is tiny. When we run it through a CSS minifier, the same code looks like this: (Of course, they also help developers write and review code, but browsers don’t care about that.)įor example, here’s how an unminified CSS files looks: In that sense, all they do is bloat code files. Minification is the process of removing unnecessary elements from your website’s code without affecting its performance.Ī few examples of unnecessary elements are:īrowsers don’t need these to render the page. What is CSS, JavaScript, and HTML Minification? If you aren’t interested in the “why” behind these techniques, skip ahead to the "Tools for HTML, CSS, and JavaScript Minification section".Īnd for the easiest way to optimize your website’s code, go to "Automated Minification and Compression with NitroPack" įor now, let’s dive a bit deeper into minification. The good thing is there are lots of tools that can help you with that. And while different, the smart move is getting them in one go. Minification - removing unnecessary parts like whitespace and comments from the code Ĭompression - applying algorithms to rewrite the files’ binary code, using fewer bits than the original.īoth are low-effort, high-reward optimizations. You can make code files lighter by applying two techniques: Reducing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript file size is a crucial part of speeding up your website. Consider using automated tools or build processes for a more streamlined and error-resistant approach, but always after performing a backup. TL DR: Minifying CSS, JavaScript, and HTML involves removing unnecessary spaces, line breaks, and comments, and shortening variable or function names. Is your library expanding but not your storage? An exciting matching with 13 levels of increasing difficulty. The idea is that you match in the same colour to shrink the chain until there are no balls left. Following the tradition of the classic game Zuma, you control a frog, which shoots colourful balls at a huge moving chain, which gradually increases. Never let the balls get to the finish line. If you miss, then the chain will accelerate its movement. If necessary, you can throw balls through one row if there are gaps in the chain. With each of the levels, the difficulty grows, which consists of speeding up a series of circles. The mugs are also patterned to make things easier for some users. It is necessary with the help of a funny frog to throw colourful balls into a moving chain. Zuma Deluxe 2 is a Zuma game, but the main cannon is stylized as a frog and its surroundings. But as long as I'm not on an editorial board, I have no say in the matter and will have to follow journal guidelines. The Hebraists will find out the precise spelling anyway, the non-Hebraists can at least pronounce it properly. Small price to pay, I think, for readability and ease of typing too. OK, you lose the distinction between the two samech and sin, and between tet and tau. Personally, I would much prefer a phonetic transliteration in Roman script. And also, non-Hebraists would completely lose out, whereas in transliterated script they can at least recognize the same word when it is named again. But it's an absolute pain to do this in the fonts required by the journals. Of course FOR MYSELF I'd prefer Hebrew every time. It's about journal editors' requirements, not my preferences. All I really wanted to do was see how you transliterate text, not get into a debate about the pros and cons. But before I say more, it would be interesting to see why you dislike it. I find it really useful for several reasons, even if one may not agree with the definition used by the author of the interlinear. George, I do not understand why you are so opposed to interlinear text. Or the other way around, put the transliteration in parenthesis. Perhaps you could place the word in Hebrew in parenthesis for those of us who have difficulty with the transliterations. Another reason I do not like transliterations, is because one can never quite properly pronounce a large percentage of words in another language when using transliterated text (for instance, those who use transliterated text to learn Spanish are doomed to have just as bad an accent as I do in English). And both are easier than the multiple notations in the transliterated scripts. It is a lot easier than the Cyrillic script, for instance. The Hebrew alphabet is not that hard to learn (I believe I can teach anyone to read the alphabet in two hours). I personally have a huge mental block about the idea of it. For instance, I find it extremely frustrating when I read Young’s commentary on Isaiah, and have to try and decipher the transliterated Hebrew. Perhaps the most important for me, is that I find it very difficult to learn the notations for transliterated Hebrew. I just wanted to say that I prefer the Hebrew script over transliterated script for several reasons. Conquer, this has been an interesting thread. The computer has been slowing down and having connection issues occasionally during this past week, but rebooting has fixed those issues each time until today. I’ve been using this computer with Tumbleweed for almost 2.5 years, and this hasn’t been an issue before, and I’ve been using it on this network 5 days a week this entire year. I don’t recall making any network setting changes on the computer or router before this happened. Rebooting (many times over the course of today while trying to fix this).Connecting to my Android phone set to USB tethering, which did show up as an ethernet interface but had the same behavior as the normal ethernet interface (as described above).Looking through the dmesg logs to see if there was some error or warning (I didn’t find anything).Starting and restarting various network-related services.Deleting the network configuration files in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/.Unblocking the interface with rfkill (wasn’t necessary, according to rfkill list).Delete /etc/nf and restart network service / restart NetworkManager / reboot. This isn’t an exhaustive list, since I’ve been trying for 8 hours and didn’t keep track of everything. I’m happy to give any other output that anyone wants, but that’s the obvious one that comes to mind. Notably, the router lists the computer as connected. Ping: : Temporary failure in name resolution PING localhost(localhost (::1)) 56 data bytesġ0 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time ping -c10 When I try to ping my router, localhost, and a website (I had to manually copy this ping -c10 192.168.1.1 When I try to use Firefox (or connect to the VPN I use for work), it just hangs, trying to connect, until it gives up. However, after a few seconds the menu shows the connection as “limited connectivity”. I can use the menu in the bottom bar to connect to my router via Wifi, and the same menu shows a successful connection if I plug in an ethernet cable. Today, though, I lost an entire day trying to fix the network interfaces, which have stopped working. I’m on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed 20201216, and I’ve been using this installation with only occasional small issues since 2018. |
